For those who’ve listened to the comings and goings of Ambridge for a number of years, you’ll know the murder mystery play isn’t a new development for Ambridge. In fact like all good story lines it’s been recycled before (Lynda Snell put together a mystery play back in 2010 upstaging Colin Dexter who was the special guest star at their fete.)
But guess what… the team behind the Archers are at it again, and this year it’s a murder mystery dinner at the Grey Gables, Ambridges very own country house hotel.
It being the Archers, it’s very likely that all Tracy’s plans will go horribly wrong. But are murder mysteries really that hard to get right?
The most important thing when planning to run a murder mystery is to pick the right company.
Yes – I know… immediately you think we say that because we want your business. But actually we have referred people to different companies before if we think the style they’re looking for is something we don’t have the expertise in.
The thing about murder mysteries is that every single firm runs them differently. There isn’t such a thing as a wholesaler for murder mystery scripts that everyone uses.
Instead many companies (like us) write our own and many firms have one, two or a few different writers who produce scripts. Some firms monitor the script output to maintain quality and keep the “style” similar, and in some firms it’s a free for all, with authors writing plots in whatever format they like – which means you can buy one game from them, but discover on purchasing the second it runs in an entirely different way.
If you are looking to run a murder mystery yourself – it’s important to understand what format of game you’re getting – which is why we ensure all our scripts run in specific categories run in the same way. We also do the same with our event managed performances. We have several different styles of event which suit different venues or private parties – so during our initial conversation we always find out as much as we can about your needs so we can get the right format for you.
We also write and run bespoke events. We’re one of the few firms who can. So if Tracy had come to us, then we may have suggested something quite different for Grey Gables first event.
If you’re an avid archers fan and fancied trying your own murder mystery dinner this Christmas – they really aren’t all that hard.
We design our dinner party games so that they’re easily played by novice hosts and you don’t need any acting ability.
No one needs to play a dead body, and there’s no requirement for fake blood, screaming or theatrics.
Instead each of our games comes with a CD (or MP3 if you download it) of the inspector who announces the murder, and also provides the solution at the end so that everyone can take part.
All the suspects are given a role play booklet, which explains what they know and gives them some suggestions of what questions to ask.
There’s some pre-scripted lines to help break the ice, and some detailed “free style” questions and answers so that no one is left lost.
What’s more – all of our murder mystery games are written so that the murderer is per-selected. This means, like a novel, you have a chance of solving the murder if you’re paying attention throughout.
We have a number of Christmas themed murder mystery games available for you to buy and play at home. And each one will accommodate 6, 8. 10 or 12 guests (and some go up to 20 if you plan to have a massive gathering!)
As with all our games, we’re here to help you every step of the way. So if you need to speak to someone or want help chosing the right game, or adjusting it to fit your gender balance or number of guests – just drop us a line!
We know our games inside out and backwards. And we aren’t run by a computer so the answer is never “no”.
