6-20 Player Murder Mystery Party Kit FAQ’s
How long does it take to play a murder mystery game?
How long a murder mystery game takes to play depends on the number of players, the format (virtual or face-to-face), and other factors like eating and drinking consumption.
- Virtual games: Approximately 10 minutes per suspect (e.g., 1 hour for 6 players, 80 minutes for 8 players). A 20-player game on Zoom can be finished in 2 hours with a faster pace.
- Face-to-face games: Typically take 2–3½ hours when combined with a meal, but can vary depending on how relaxed the dining is. Adding ad-libbing, general conversation, can extend the duration.
- Quick large-group games: Custom “suspect/witness” split formats can reduce game time and maintain pace.
On average, dinner party murder mystery games take 2–3½ hours depending on circumstances.
You can find a more in-depth answer with more examples here.
Can the host play a Murder Mystery Game as well?
Yes the host can play. We designed our games to give you options when using our murder mystery games as a host you can decide to either
- Play the inspector
- Play a character
- Play a character AND the inspector.
- Just play host and use the recorded Video or Audio inspector.

How long will it take for my murder mystery game to arrive?
For downloadable kits delivery is instant. As soon as you clear check out you’ll be able to download your order.
If you order a CUSTOM version of a game – the first kit you will be able to access will be the original order. This is because we manually sit and adjust the games in the office when they’re ordered, so any customsation requires human input. This means the customisation will be done as soon as we can do it. Usually this is within 2 working days and once finished we email it to you. However we know how people like to plan… so the website delivers the original game immediately and we follow this up manually with an adjusted copy as soon as we’ve finished the work!
We are sensitive to the environment so rather than cutting down thousands of trees and holding stock, we print on demand.
This means printed order requests are handled within 24-48 hours and they’re usually dispatched as soon as they’re printed.
We work a 5 day week in the retail team. This means orders are shipped Monday through Friday.

Can I play this game with an odd number of guests e.g. 7 or 9 etc?
Yes, our games can be played in odd group sizes. We have a few options on how to do this:
- One guest can play as the inspector. In this case, a game for 8 players would suit a party of 9, for example. The option for a guest to play the inspector is included in all our Murder Mystery game kits.
- Ask us to adjust the game for you. We can make a number of changes to our games to fit your party; in most cases, this is by removing a character. There is a charge for this service, and it can be ordered when buying your game. Just order the size bigger than you need and use the customise game option to choose to remove one character.
- Get creative with your casting; people can share roles, or someone can play two characters.
We have more information about this on our blog here.

Party Kit Adaptations
If you’re looking to keep things as simple as possible then why not use our party kit adaptations for larger groups. These are easy to host – and run in a similar way to the dinner party games, acted out script in hand, and include the wider audience who now ask the questions.

Bespoke Murder Mystery
We can create a fully custom murder mystery game tailored just for your event, or you can choose from one of our ready-to-play favourites. If you’d prefer to sit back and enjoy the experience, one of our professional hosts can come along to run the game for you — so you can join in the fun with your guests!
Christmas Murder Mystery Scripts for Larger Groups
If you need to keep things simple, don’t have time to learn lots of lines and want a theatrical flare with some dead bodies and screaming, then you can’t go wrong with our Skit and Clue style games like Brandy Butter Murders and Murder in the Grotto. These work best for numbers larger than 50 but can be made to work for smaller groups. Details on how to do that here.
If you’re looking for a full theatrical production, with actors taking on the script so that the rest of the guests can enjoy the experience, then A Criminal Christmas Caper and Strictly Come Murder, are our most popular games at Christmas. If you don’t want to act – then don’t forget you can hire us in to help you!
How does a large group murder mystery script work?
- These games require 7-13 cast and involve the rest of the audience by getting them to ask pre-set questions – which are provided to them on paper by the inspector at the start of each round.
- They run in a similar way to a dinner party, so are an ideal first choice for novice hosts and acing teams with little or no experience running large scale events.
- These games work best as a sit down event with 6-12 tables of guests, with a suspect on each table.
- As a rough guide these mysteries take approximately 2-3 hours to complete with a three course meal.
- During the game the audience will listen to five short sets of dialogue from the cast and pose pre-scripted questions (which the cast answer with pre-scripted answers). There are three rounds which can be evenly spread throughout the night or, if preferred, the question and answer rounds can be bunched together into one large round.
- At the end of the final round the guests are given time to decide who is the murderer, and once the guests have decided who did it, how and why (i.e. the murderer and motive) they will complete the answer sheet and hand it in.
- How these games usually run.
- Introductory Round: Introductions by the cast and the facilitator “inspector character”. Rounds 1, 2 and 3: Scripted dialogue from the cast, followed by pre-set questions and answers. Concluding Statements and solution: conclusions by the cast and denouement from the inspector.
- There is one “inspector character” who acts as a facilitator during the event and is essential to the cast.
- Reducing the cast size will reduce the length of time required to solve the mystery.
Multi-room Game
Looking to host in multiple rooms or need something that will make your zoom or teams call extra special this year – then our multi-room game “A Christmas Carol Catastrophe” may well be the game for you.
Village carolling themed, and with some easy to obtain props, this one lends itself to use in a larger house, or with picture evidence on a zoom call. We love hosting this one online so if you have a virtual office team building – reach out and see what we can do.
How does a multi-room murder mystery game kit work?
- Multi-room events are designed to be run in multiple rooms in a venue and are a great way of showing off your premises, or getting maximum footfall through what would otherwise be too small a venue for a traditional murder mystery evening.
- These events have proved very popular with the guests, as it encourages them to interrogate the suspects and locate clues hidden around the building. There are usually seven to eight cast, one murder occurs before the evening and the crime scene is set up in one of the rooms in the venue.
- The instructions document (the sample file attached) contains the details of the physical clues you will need to obtain for the evening – these are usually easy to obtain props, and some games have paper clues within them too.
- We usually suggest a roving buffet as the guests move between rooms, but some hosts prefer to have a formal two-course meal mid-way through the evening.
- For these events guests require a special handout and a pen/pencil to keep track of information presented to them.
- The scripts are, in the main, monologues which means they can be learned ahead of the event by the actors. Two actors will share a duologue.
- Due to the nature of these events, and the need for each guest to have a hand-out, we will only print one copy of each file when ordered as a printed kit. If you wish further copies of the guest handout – please get in touch so we can find out how many copies you need and provide you with a quote.
