Finding the Best Murder Mystery Games for Teenagers

A few of our regulars know that Red Herring Games was birthed specifically because of the difficulty finding murder mystery games for teenagers aged 11–16. The boss helps at a church youth group and, unable to find something suitable on the market (or any content guidance on existing games), set out to write her own.

If you’ve ever struggled to find a fun, engaging, and screen-free activity for teens, we are very much here to help!

Murder mystery games for teenagers are the perfect way to encourage social interaction in a non-threatening, comfortable environment. Whether you’re hosting a family gathering, a teen birthday party, a youth group event, or just planning a weekend activity, we can help you find a game that’s both appropriate and a guaranteed hit.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through why murder mystery games are great fun for teens, how to choose the right one, and tips for hosting an unforgettable party.

Why Murder Mystery Games Are Great Fun for Teenagers

Teenagers can sometimes be socially awkward. In a group, it’s common to see a few outliers. Not everyone mixes easily, and in party settings, a few teens may disappear into their phones or sit quietly on the sidelines.

That’s where murder mystery games for teenagers shine. They give everyone a defined role and a purpose. The structure offers conversation starters, while the role play lets teens step outside their comfort zones—taking on new characters can be freeing!

Plus, there are other key benefits that make these games ideal for teens and pre-teens:

  • The Games Build Critical Thinking Skills: Teens analyse clues, follow conversational hints, and work solo or together to solve the mystery.
  • The Games Encourages Teamwork: Working together to discuss the case encourages communication and collaboration.
  • They Are Screen-Free Fun: Our games create a welcome break from phones and tablets.  They are social games, creating memorable, in-person experiences.
  • The Games are Inclusive for All Interests: From drama lovers to puzzle enthusiasts, there’s something for everyone!  And because they can just be read “word for word” even the most social awkward and shy find themselves on a level entry point.

Choosing the Right Murder Mystery Games for Teenagers

When selecting the best murder mystery games for teenagers, here’s what to keep in mind:

  1. Age-Appropriate Content
Stick to teen-rated games to ensure the themes and language are suitable. This avoids anything like to cause issues with parents or any role play activities that are mor awkward (e.g. acting attracted to someone in the group, or pretending to be pregnant, or admitting to taking drugs.)  Even most of our mature rated games are no worse than your average soap opera, and because we can supply games in an editable format – if you prefer a specific theme for you group but need to tone things down – we can send you the MS Word version so you can make minor changes.

  2. Themes Teens Love

Teenagers are just young adults.  What you like as an adult will often be what they will enjoy as teenagers too.  Like adults – they like all the regular Agatha Christie tropes.  Many also enjoy dressing up at this age (though few will admit to it).  After all it was only a few years ago they were in primary school getting all ready for world book day.  What we often find is that if you give them a theme to dress up to – they will make a much bigger effort than you expect, so don’t shy away from heavily themed games!  Like adults they will enjoy dressing as pirates, spies, celebrities or in 1920s costume.

The boss’s youth group have all enjoyed the following murder mystery games for teenagers:

  3. Group Size and Dynamics
It’s really important to get the right game for you group size and dynamics.  Some groups don’t mind cross dressing, but for others they would rather die themselves than be asked to dress as and play a different gender.  So it’s important to be sensitive.

We have a couple of teen rated gender neutral games which are appropriate for youth groups (A Steam Punk Murder and It’s a wonderful Death) – but you may find we can create an uneven gender ratio on a few more, especially if you have someone in the inspector role and so aren’t reliant on the video inspector being accurate.

When you have a youth group you’ll often find the guest numbers flex right up until the day too which can make things really awkward!  When Jo has run events for her group she’s often created what we call a “suspect/witness” split.  Which is where turn the large group version of the game into a game where the group all have a character but only some have suspect roles.  This gives you a game with 20 possible characters but only 6 or 8 are actually suspects.

Everyone else just has a character to dress up to and questions to ask each round facilitated by the inspector.  We’re gradually converting all our games to do this for the medium size groups – but until we’ve finished you won’t find them in this format on the website – so if you need a murder mystery game for teenagers that suits your group – contact us for help!

Tips for Hosting an Amazing Murder Mystery Party for Teenagers

  1. Set the Scene
Create an immersive atmosphere with themed decorations, props, and costumes. Teens love the chance to dress up and get into character and they will feel more prepared to get into character if you’ve also made an effort setting up the scene in the house or hall you’re using.

  2. Encourage Participation
Help shy teens feel comfortable by assigning smaller roles or witness characters that don’t require much dialogue.

  3. Keep It Flexible
If you’re short on time, simplify the game by skipping optional rounds or condensing the storyline.

  4. Add Food and Music
There’s something special about being treated like an adult and being served a three course meal.  I know whenever I’ve hosted a murder mystery for the kids they’ve become most excited about the fact they were being treated like adults and having the “full experience” with the three course meal and mocktails for teens too.  It’s not important to have a meal while playing, and we’ve run several events without food too but if you can, and have the inclination – then make the event special with three courses, even if it’s only something simple like garlic bread, pizza and ice cream! Keep the energy up with a great music playlist to match the game’s vibe as everyone arrives!

Including those with more complex needs

We have always tried to make our murder mystery games for teenagers as inclusive as possible, but in order to play a character someone will need to have a good reading and speaking ability. Where you have a mixed dynamic and some teens who have more complex needs, then it’s important to create roles that they will enjoy without putting too much pressure on them.

In these instances we usually suggest splitting the entire group into a suspect/witness format.  The witnesses only have to ask questions, which means they can still dress up to a character, and can take part solving the case, but during the game itself all they have to do is ask questions.  You can therefore allocate questions that are easier for them to say or read, and assist as needed when they ask their question(s).

We always suggest ensuring that the suspect / witness roles are divided to ensure the witnesses include a mix of those with more complex needs and those without.  This ensures they feel part of the entire game and not specifically singled out for the “smaller” roles.

If you have any concerns or queries, need game materials in a different format for those who are partially sighted, or need some ideas to help those who are deaf join in – just reach out.  The boss is in Occupational Therapist by training, and is able to think outside the box and work with you to find a format that will help you have fun!
