Ultimate Murder Mystery Party FAQ: How It Works, What You Need, and Hosting Tips

Planning your first event can feel like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be a crime! Whether you are a seasoned sleuth or a nervous first-timer, this Ultimate Murder Mystery Party FAQ is designed to answer every question you might have. From choosing your theme to handling a guest who drops out at the last minute, our criminal mastermind Jo Smedley has the answers.

Quick answers (for skim-readers)

  • What is it? A themed party game where guests play characters, uncover clues, and try to solve a fictional murder.
  • How long does it take to play? Typically 5–3 hours, depending on format and how chatty your group is.
  • How many people do you need? Many games work best at 6–12, but there are options for smaller and larger groups.
  • Do guests have to act? They will be playing a character, but don’t need to maintain that all the time. Everything they need to know is all provided for them and most people naturally get into it once the game starts.
  • Is the murderer random? Not in our games, the murderer is always pre-set, so the clues are tightly structured and the ending is satisfying.
  • What you need: A game kit (ours or someone else’s), notebook and pens to keep track of information, a simple schedule so you know what happens when, and a host who keeps things moving. Our games come with a video inspector so you may want access to a laptop or tablet.

The Ultimate Murder Mystery Party FAQ

1. Basics: what it is and how it works

What exactly is a murder mystery party?

A murder mystery party is a social game where your guests take on characters, uncover clues, and work out “whodunnit.” It’s part party, part puzzle, and part storytelling – perfect if you want something more memorable than just drinks and background music.  They’re usually designed to run over a meal, but you can skip the meal very easily and just run it during a session.  The main requirement is that you’re all in one place*.

*most games work like this – but not all, and many will adapt to be multi-room – just reach out for a chat if you specifically need a multi-room option.

How does a murder mystery party work?

Most murder mystery parties follow a simple flow: guests get their character information, the story opens with a description of the murder, clues are revealed in stages usually by chatting and asking questions, and everyone discusses theories before making an accusation. At the end, the solution is revealed and you crown your best detective.

Murder mystery parties are different to case file mysteries.  To find out how they’re different read this blog: Party Games vs. Case File Mysteries: Which Murder Mystery Experience Is Right for You?

How long does a murder mystery party last?

Most murder mystery party games run for 1.5–3 hours. If you’re pairing it with a full meal, allow a little longer for serving and cleaning.  People love to chat, accuse, and dramatically defend themselves between courses.  The more chatty your group is, the longer the game will take.  For specific information on how long things take – check out: How long does it take to play?

What happens during the game?

You’ll have a mix of questions to ask other guests, there may even be some clues to review as a group, the guests converse with specific information each of them know, and the inspector usually provides additional information as the party progresses. The fun comes from the social side, watching people acting in character, arguing and changing their minds on the suspects as new information appears.

2. Planning: What You Need and When to Do It

Is it like Cluedo / Clue?

It’s similar in the sense that you’re solving a murder, but otherwise it’s totally different!  (Weirdly board games and party games often end up in the same places and it’s no wonder people get confused.).  Murder mystery parties are usually more social and character-led than a board game. Think of them as a really easy introduction to role playing games.  All the clues to solve the case are with the suspects themselves.  There is no dice, no playing cards, and no “movement around a board”.  It’s all chatting and social deduction.

Is it like Traitors?

No.  With Traitors you are trying to identify a killer with no clues.  Traitors is pure social deduction based on psychology only.  Murder mystery parties provide specific clues and evidence to lead you to the culprit.

If you like Traitors and are looking for a traitor style game – then we provide a free MAFIA game here on our website.

Can I Host and play?

Yes of course!  If hosts never played, then very few people would come back to host another party.   Most party games allow for the host to play as a suspect, but there are companies who have a specific role for a host as “games master” so pick carefully and get the right game for you.

We’ve got a blog specifically about this here: Hosting a Flexible Format Murder Mystery

What do I need to host a murder mystery party?

To use this Ultimate Murder Mystery Party FAQ effectively, ensure you have:

  • A game kit (ours or another provider’s).
  • A way to share character info (print or digital).
  • Pens and paper for notes.
  • A laptop or tablet for the video inspector.

Decorations and costumes, themed meal, all are optional – but they can make the night feel extra special.

We have a check list if that helps – free to download at the bottom of this page: Where to Start

Do we have to eat a meal and be in the same room?

Not at all.  Not all hosts plan a meal when they play.  The games often naturally break to allow meals, but you can run the rounds one after another, or pause for drinks or comfort breaks between rounds, or play a different game to split up the accusations.

We have a blog detailing some ideas for hosting without a meal and in different rooms here: Hosting a Flexible Format Murder Mystery.

How far in advance should I plan?

For a relaxed experience, plan 2–6 weeks ahead so guests can commit and (if they want) sort costumes. If you’re doing a last-minute party, you can still run a murder mystery successfully – just choose a format that’s flexible and keep the prep simple.

If you’re looking to hire us in to host it with you – then 6 weeks notice or more will ensure you get the best possible price, and the best service.  Though we have dropped everything and helped folk who’ve been let down by other providers with 4 days notice or less before!

Do I need to decorate or have costumes?

No. A murder mystery party works without any extras. That said, even one small touch -name cards, a themed playlist, or a simple table setup – can help guests get into character quickly.

What food works best for a murder mystery dinner party?

Choose food that’s easy to serve and doesn’t trap you in the kitchen. Buffets, sharing platters, slow-cooker dishes, cold starters and desserts, or “bring a plate” shared meals all keep the host free to enjoy the game. If you’re doing courses, build in natural “game play breaks” between them.

3. Guest numbers: the most common hosting worry

How many people do you need for a murder mystery party?

Many murder mystery party games are designed for 6–12 players, because that’s a sweet spot for character interaction and most people have a room that fits that number of players. You can run smaller or larger groups too, but you’ll want a game designed for that size so no one feels left out.  We stock games from 4-20 players and larger script formats for group sizes up to 2000 or more.

What if I have an odd number of guests?

Odd numbers are common and usually easy to handle. We have a whole blog on how to remove a character last minute.

The best options are: choose a game that supports one less and use the inspector script for the additional character, become a  “non-playing host” , allocate someone to two roles or two people to one role,  or pick a format where characters can be removed without breaking the story.

Do I need equal numbers of men and women?

No. Many modern murder mystery party games are written to be flexible, and guests can often play any character regardless of gender. If you’re worried about it, choose a game with adaptable casting and send character info early so people can opt into roles they’ll enjoy. We made the decision a few years ago to include gender neutral characters in all of our party packs to make assigning guests easier.

What if someone drops out last minute?

This happens all the time. With our games we’re so familiar with this we’ve got a blog detailing all the options you have available to you: How to Remove a Character from a Murder Mystery Game at the Last Minute.

The key is not to panic it’s always possible to read around a missing guest, and your guests will still have a brilliant night. We’ve seen people use puppets, prerecord the guests Q and A and play them when needed.  If you don’t have time to adapt, then you can make it work.

Can I host if I don’t know exactly who’s coming?

Yes and no.  What you’ll need is a flexible format and don’t allocate roles until you have everyone confirmed. If you’re expecting plus-ones or maybes, plan for a range rather than a fixed headcount.  And pair up suspects so you will always have someone in the role even if the spare is missing.

All of our game kits come with digital “save the date” invitations so you can firm up your guests before allocating them to characters.

4. Gameplay:  keeping it fun for even the shyest guests.

Do guests have to act?

No. Acting is entirely optional with most murder mystery parties. Most people start by reading their role, then naturally get more playful as the game progresses. A good murder mystery party works even if guests stay mostly “themselves” and just enjoy the game.

When we host we try to pick a few more outgoing guests who we know will get into character, as these naturally encourage the more shy to ham things up a little.

What if my guests are shy?

Give them an easy character that naturally fits their personality to play.   Costumes can help shy guests feel like they’re “playing a role” even if they are just reading out their lines.

Some shy guests like their booklets ahead of time so they can prepare – others will be totally overwhelmed to have their booklet early – so ensure you give your guests only as much information as they need to feel comfortable.

For those who are totally tongue tied you may want to pair them up with someone else so they only need to ask the questions in a game rather than play a character with answers.

Can the host play too?

Sometimes yes, but it depends on the game format. If the host needs to manage clue reveals and timing, it can be easier to host without playing a full character. If you want to play, choose a kit that supports a host role or has a simple structure.

Our games permit the host to play either as a character or as the inspector, you can find out more on the blog below:

If I’m hosting a murder mystery can I play too?

Is the murderer chosen randomly?

Not in our games. The murderer is always pre-set. That means the clues are written to fit one solution, which makes the story tighter and the final reveal more satisfying. If you’re curious about the trade-offs (and why some hosts prefer it), see our deeper guide linked below.

How do we “win” a murder mystery party?

Your group “wins” by naming the murder correctly, but even if they fail to find the right murderer – they’ll have had fun, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  Although many games have the same ending, some hosts repeat the same party with a different group of friends because they had so much fun the first time around.

You can choose to give out prizes for those who guess correctly, or just give everyone a special party bag to remember the experience by.

5. Formats: dinner party, flexible, virtual, and corporate

Do we have to sit down for a meal?

Not at all. You can run a murder mystery party as a mingle-style event where guests move around, chat, and trade information. This can be especially good for larger groups or parties where people don’t want to be seated the whole time.   More details on that here: Hosting a Flexible Format Murder Mystery

What’s the difference between a downloadable kit and a boxed game?

A downloadable kit is fast and flexible – you can print what you need and run it at home. A boxed game can feel more “giftable” and is convenient if you want everything ready to go. The best choice depends on whether you value speed and flexibility or a physical, ready-to-go experience.

Can you do a murder mystery party virtually?

Yes. Virtual murder mystery parties work exceptionally well, you’re just switching the dinner table for a computer screen.  Our games are designed to transfer to online play instantly and we run hundreds of online games for our customers each year.

If you’re setting up a virtual game, you might need a guide on how to share your screen on Zoom to ensure everyone can see the inspector video clearly.

Are murder mystery parties good for corporate teams?

They can be brilliant for team building because they encourage communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. For corporate groups, the best experiences are usually hosted or facilitated, so the organiser can relax and the pacing stays tight.  We have a facilitators guide for murder mystery hosting that will help you get the idea over the finish line with your manager here: Power of Corporate Team Building Guide.

Age and suitability

Are murder mystery parties suitable for kids or teens?

Yes and no.  You need to ensure you choose a game written for that age group. For younger players, look for clean content, our games are classed either TEEN (clean) or MATURE (more risqué).  Players under 10, may struggle with the reading level needed in standard murder mysteries which is why we have a range of games specifically for the 7-9 year old bracket.

However if you just happen to have a youngster at your family gathering then there are ways you can integrate them into the event without causing problems.  Check out this blog: How to Include Younger Children in Murder Mystery Games.

Are murder mystery parties scary?

Usually not. Most are more “intrigue and laughter” than horror. If your group dislikes anything creepy, then you’ll be totally fine with a murder mystery party.  They are often more farce than fright.

Troubleshooting: common problems (and easy fixes)

What if people don’t read their character sheets?

Make it easy: give them their booklets as they arrive and give them a few minutes to read through when they arrive. Once the game is moving, most guests catch up fast.  But you may need to remind them which page they should be on now and again and give them a few prompts as host.

What if we’re running out of time?

Skip optional side conversations, exchange question and answer rounds for just “statements” and ask everyone just to read out their “answers” and provide the information they know.  You may want to “shrink the suspects” and keep the core suspects in the game, moving the other more optional suspects out of the frame to speed up the rounds.    Keep the final accusations short and direct.

What if someone solves it too early?

That’s okay, because they won’t have that confirmed until the end.  Encourage them to wait until the accusation stage to make their final accusations.  Quite often they hear something that will make them change their mind!

6. Choosing the right game (and what to do next)

How do I choose the best murder mystery party game?

Picking the best murder mystery party for you is entirely subjective!  Some people start with player count, others look at the theme first.  Whichever way you do it, check the suspect list carefully and ensure you can easily fit your guests to the suspects.  You don’t want to end up playing “the old hag” because you can’t give it to anyone else!

What’s the best murder mystery party for beginners?

Beginners usually do best with a clear structure, a manageable runtime, and characters that are easy to understand. If your group is nervous, choose a lighter theme and avoid anything too complicated.

We have a short blog on the best murder mystery games for beginners here: Murder Mystery Games for Beginners
