FAQ's

How long does it take to play a murder mystery game?

How long a murder mystery game takes to play depends on the number of players, the format (virtual or face-to-face), and other factors like eating and drinking consumption.

  • Virtual games: Approximately 10 minutes per suspect (e.g., 1 hour for 6 players, 80 minutes for 8 players). A 20-player game on Zoom can be finished in 2 hours with a faster pace.
  • Face-to-face games: Typically take 2–3½ hours when combined with a meal, but can vary depending on how relaxed the dining is. Adding ad-libbing, general conversation, can extend the duration.
  • Quick large-group games: Custom “suspect/witness” split formats can reduce game time and maintain pace.

On average, dinner party muder mystery games take 2–3½ hours depending on circumstances.

You can find a more in-depth answer with more examples here.

For downloadable kits delivery is instant.  As soon as you clear check out you’ll be able to download your order.

If you order a CUSTOM version of a game – the first kit you will be able to access will be the original order.  This is because we manually sit and adjust the games in the office when they’re ordered, so any customsation requires human input.  This means the customisation will be done as soon as we can do it.  Usually this is within 2 working days and once finished we email it to you.  However we know how people like to plan… so the website delivers the original game immediately and we follow this up manually with an adjusted copy as soon as we’ve finished the work!

We are sensitive to the environment so rather than cutting down thousands of trees and holding stock, we print on demand.

This means printed order requests are handled within 24-48 hours and they’re usually dispatched as soon as they’re printed.

We work a 5 day week in the retail team.  This means orders are shipped Monday through Friday.

Yes, our games can be played in odd group sizes. We have a few options on how to do this:

  1. One guest can play as the inspector. In this case, a game for 8 players would suit a party of 9, for example. The option for a guest to play the inspector is included in all our Murder Mystery game kits.
  2. Ask us to adjust the game for you. We can make a number of changes to our games to fit your party; in most cases, this is by removing a character. There is a charge for this service, and it can be ordered when buying your game. Just order the size bigger than you need and use the customise game option to choose to remove one character.
  3.  Get creative with your casting; people can share roles, or someone can play two characters.

I hosted this party a few weeks ago for ten friends. It was a huge hit and all the characters were very interesting and the plot was fun and easy to follow. Two people guessed the murderer. I think it's great that not even the host knows the murderer until the very end. I originally bought for 8 characters and emailed a week before the party and they sent me the 10 character game. Red Herring was friendly and helpful. I have already ordered a different set and am looking forward to hosting another murder mystery party!

A great game, lots of fun! Thank you Jo for adding the additional roles for the two young children. The kids were happy to play all through the game and never got tired (we could have even given them bigger roles than the adults had :-) thanks for your flexibility and customer service! You have a new repeat customer. Be-st regards from Switzerland

We played this on New Year's Eve with 4 adults and 4 teenagers and we all had a great time. The game was adapted for 5 females and 3 males and it worked very well - it really was a lot of fun.

This is a fabulous game - really good scope for dressing up asmuch or as little as you want. We had a great New Year with this one, the receipe ideas were also great and not too expensive. Definitely would recommend this.

We had great fun playing this for a 30th birthday. Was great that the person organising it had no idea who the murderer was and the sound files for the detective were great. Only 2 people got it right!

We have played several Murder Mysteries, on holiday in France in a farmhouse, and at dinner parties with friends. This is the first time we have used an on line site - it was easy to follow as an 'Internet Novice' and we will definitely use again. We needed to adapt to 11 players and this was all done for us - this was so much easier as they adapted the roles to accommodate the number of players. Previously we have had to have one person taking on two roles! Well done! We had a great New Year. We did have one problem - people were still carrying on in their assigned rolls the next day!!!!!!

This was our first murder mystery game we have ever played and it was an excellent way to spend Hogmanay. Everyone had such a good laugh and we are looking forward to organising another murer mystery soon. We will definitely use Red Herring Games again as they were so helpful and efficient, we had a couple of people who dropped out at the last minute but thanks to the great service provided by Red Herring Games our Murder Mystery Party could still go ahead.

We all had a fantastic time but I wanted to drop you a note to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU! We all had a fantastic time and really enjoyed the story, everyone got into character and played their parts really well and half of us managed to get who the killer was (including me) So once again, thank you for all your hard work adapting it for our numbers and generally being oh so very helpful and we all can't wait for the next round!

We used the 10 player 1920s themed game for a birthday party in November. Fab customer service and fab game. Everyone was a potential suspect and there was no easy give away. We all had a great time! If anyone is doing the game with Connie Chiglie in it, comment as I went overboard on resources/ invites etc so i'll email them to you if you want them!

Customise this game

This game can be customised to fit your event for an additional fee.

It’s hard to give “ball park” figures for what different customisations would cost however we’ve attempted to HERE.

Please do contact us for a free quote if you would like any customisations on your game before purchase.

Remember… if you just need 1 extra person, or 1 less person, why not have someone play the inspector role?

The inspector can usually be male or female as the “for real” inspector can simply invent a new name for themselves.

Some hosts prefer to play the inspector role as it means they can work on the catering while the round plays out amongst their guests.
