After many years of exemplary service M (the head of MI 6) is retiring. And what a bash it is! Friends, colleagues, and even criminal masterminds have put in an appearance. In fact, it would be safe to say that everyone who is anyone is there to see he gets a good send off.

Well, everyone that is except Roger Damsels, 006 ¾, MI 6’s top secret agent. When a search is undertaken for the celebrated spy, he is discovered dead in his room, leaving M with one last crime to solve before he can retire.

Characters in the 6 player game:

Gold Thumb – The man with the Midas touch
Dripping in gold accessories and expensive clothing, Gold Thumb probably carries more carat than cash.

Kitty With-Claws – A pussy cat you wouldn’t want to mess with

Scaryminger – The man with the golden bum
Living on a desert island, Scaryminger is always able to perfect his all over tan, right to his third nipple.

Cuttlefishy – More than a sweet distraction
With floaty dresses and serene expression you could be mistaken into thinking Cuttlefishy was an easy catch.

Ernst FuzzyFelt – The man with the white cat
Despite his keen love of white felines, Ernst’s dark suit never even carries a hair.

Miss Penny Farthing – Secretary
In business suit, or undercover, Miss Penny Farthing has never yet succumbed to any spy’s advances.

Additional characters in the 8 player game:

Dr Yes – Or is it No? Perhaps Undecided would be a better title
On one of his rare appearances away from his island, Dr Yes is simply a man in a suit – but with a dastardly plan.

Xenia Onabottom – A woman who knows how to take care of herself
With fast cars, glitzy dresses and the ability to kill with her thighs, Xenia is a nice girl when you get to know her – honest!

Additional characters in the 10 player game:

Felix Heavier – An ally within the CIA
When you want to send for the heavy mob, Felix is your man. He has a full six pack, as well as enough ammunition to sink a battleship.

Quadruple X – The Russian spy
In snow gear, or flimsy Egyptian dresses, Quadruple X is still a force to be reckoned with.

Additional characters in the 12 player game:

Gnaws – A solid tower of a henchman
Gnaws did have a nice smile, but unfortunately, frequent visits to the dentist have left him with more fillings than teeth.

Dr. Easter Jones – A scientific beauty
In vest top and shorts, or greasy overalls, there’s no denying Jones has a perfect figure, even if it is only 3.1415926.

Additional characters in the 14 player game:

Q – Master of gadgets at MI6.
Wearing a white lab coat and always having an array of top secret equipment to hand, Q is the only man in MI6 who packs more gadgets than the spies!

Dr Molly Hotflush – MI6 physician.
An attractive white-coated medical professional, Dr. Hotflush often wears a short skirted suit and heels under her white coat and is always on duty.

Additional characters in the 16 player game:

Ivanna Romp- Masseuse.
Sultry and seductive, Ivanna has a calming Austrian accent and very smooth skin.

Elliot Palaver – Media mogul.
Cleanly pressed and never without his palmtop and other gadgets, Elliot isn’t a man to mess with.

Additional characters in the 18 player game:

Kissy Goodnight – Japanese secret agent.
An attractive woman with an athletic figure, Kissy is fond of her cultural heritage and will often don a kimono when she isn’t running around in a swimsuit.

Snick Snack – Henchman.
More British than the British, Snick Snack is a short Chinaman in a black suit with a bowler hat.

Additional characters in the 20 player game:

Elektra Queen – Oil baroness.
Seductively dressed and impressively bejewelled, Electra is a beauty with a very cold heart.

Le Chevre – Banker to the world’s terrorist organisations.
With scarring around his eyes and a tendency to cry blood, Le Chevre is immaculately dressed and never without a deck of cards.

Never run a downloadable murder mystery before? Then don’t panic! There is no special acting required. Guests do not need to memorise any information, and everything they need to play their parts is provided to them in a handy printable booklet. The games are constructed so that everyone has to interact, and scripted dialogues are included to help break the ice and get everyone into character. Even total novices get into the swing of things quite quickly!

The game includes both sound files and a script for the inspector character who provides the setting, clues, and summaries for each round, as well as the final solution. This means as host you too can play and remain completely in the dark as to the culprit, or play the inspector yourself and invite an extra guest to the party!

Each downloadable dinner party game requires use of a printer, around 120 sheets of A4 paper (each character booklet is around 9 pages long), envelopes so you can send out your invitations, and either a laptop or MP3 player (e.g. an ipod) to play the inspector MP3s; OR a CD burner so you can burn the MP3s onto a CD to run in an ordinary CD player.

When you purchase this kit you will download the following files:

  • How to use this game
  • Instructions for running the murder mystery
  • Making the most of your theme- ideas for decoration / activities.
  • Invitations
  • Character Booklets (available in single sided printer and double sided printer format)
  • Scripted for the inspector character (available in single sided printer and double sided printer format)
  • Solution script for the inspector character (needed when printing from the single sided copy)
  • MP3 files for the inspector character (dialogue and solution)
  • Hints and tips
  • Recipe suggestions
  • Money off voucher towards next purchase

When you purchase this kit as a printed kit you will receive through the post:

  • Instruction booklet (includes hints and tips)
  • Invitations and envelopes for all the guests
  • Character booklets
  • CD of the inspector
  • Inspector booklet in a sealed envelope so you don’t find out the solution by accident!
  • Making the most of your theme and recipe suggestions booklets.
  • Money off voucher towards next purchase (printed inside the booklets)

We can customise this game.  However, sadly we do have to charge for this service as even minor customisations take between 1-2 hours to process in the office and we need to buy toilet roll and biscuits as much as the next person…

It’s hard to give “ball park” figures for what different customisations would cost however we’ve attempted to HERE.

Remember… if you just need 1 extra person, or 1 less person, why not add in the inspector as your extra guest.  The inspector can usually be male or female as the “for real” inspector can simply invent a new name for themselves.

Some hosts prefer to play the inspector role as it means they can work on the catering while the round plays out amongst their guests.

  1. We used this as entertainment for our Homemakers “Mens Night” party. Everyone had a fabulous time. The ages of our players ranged from 30 to 82 and everyone loved it. We are currently planning next years party and will once again rely on Red Herring to ensure its success.

  2. Our guests had a fantastic evening and all joined in the fun of playing their characters. Red Herring did a wonderful job of customising this Murder Mystery to include places of interest to our friends as well as personal characteristics in the descriptions. The CD was even updated and worked really well. Only one guest did their detective work correctly working out who “dunnit” and as there were so many permutations it caused much hilarity. We would recommend Red Herring highly and thank you for customising our Murder Mystery so successfully at short notice.

  3. We did this for my husbands birthday, it was very good and easy to follow especially for some of our friends who had never done one before. It made for a very enjoyable evening for us all 🙂 I did chocolate guns, sprayed gold for place settings and the table was sprinkled with diamonds, casino chips and our local florist did a table decoration which had some eyes peeping out from the under growth!

  4. Just wanted to say thank you for your game. It was a great success with everyone talking about it a week later, saying they haven’t laughed so much in ages. A million thanks for lots of fun. All the best Erica

  5. This game was brilliant, we had no idea who the murder was, mabe that was too much drinking, but the night went really well. 5 out of 5 for all who played!!!

  6. I have hosted a Murder Mystery New Year game for last 6 years and for the last 3 years have used Red Herring. All have been brilliant but You Only die Once has to be the best. 12 family members and friends of all ages get together, some females have to take male parts but they always do this graciously. Everyone got into character and had a great giggle, only one person guest the murderer which was also different as we normally have a bout 4 winning. I would definitely recommend this game based around the 007 theme, which everyone enjoys. Lookin-g forward to next year, thinking of buying the the Masquerade Ball, getting everyone to come in masks. Love Red Herring there is so much choice for 12 people. Than-k you

  7. We had our party a few weeks ago and I just wanted to say thank you for the help and advice you provided. I took note of some of the advice, particularly making an effort at the invitation stage, and it paid off. A few comments I received were “Thanks for all the effort you went to for last night. It was loads of fun” and “Brilliant night, thank you so much for all your hard work. It was lots of fun and lovely food. I was very impressed with the outfits and acting all round…who knew we had such hidden depths!” I also took it one step further, we took photos of each couple as they arrived, and used these to make thank you cards for after the event which I wrote in character!

    Thanks again,
    Nicola

Flexible and fun!

We contacted Red-Herring-Games for a party for a special occasion. Why going to restaurants to eat is the preferred activity to mark milestones is beyond me and my friends.   The choice of mystery was obvious, looking at the options from New Zealand on the web Red Herring stuck out from the international options.  A quick look at the site and games showed subtlety as well a range of choices.  The numbers you could have for each evening was important,  Red Herring had scaling options a good range of scenarios but most importantly were Jo and team being flexible, responsive and helpful.

Rachel McWilliam, Arts Development Officer, Lincs Inspire

Thank you Red Herring Games for the marvellous 'Murder!  Cargo Connections?' event that you organised for us as part of Museums at Night at the Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby. The whole evening went so well and was brilliant fun.  I know from all the feedback that our visitors had a fantastic time. It was really good working with you and I have no doubt that we will do again in the not too distant future.

A. Nonymous (council employee)

I would like to thank you and your colleague for helping contribute towards our successful conference last month.  Everyone really seemed to enjoy the evening and it was rewarding that so many delegates were able to participate in addition to the main "Actors".  Our conference evaluation froms included the following comments:
  • "Enjoyed the evening entertainment!"
  • The evening entertainment was great and the confusion made it great fun!"
With thanks and best wishes.

I had no idea what to expect before purchasing a ticket for Old, New, Borrowed, Blue, which was being staged at a nearby hotel, and feared it might involve taking part in some way. However thankfully for me no acting was necessary, just some amateur sleuthing. "Wedding guests" of which I was one, were called upon to move from room to room in the hotel in groups, questioning a number of possible murderers with the aim of solving the mystery of the dead bridegroom. The interviewees were really fun characters and gave us all some good laughs. Of course they all had motives and it was a case of identifying the shiftiest. The wedding theme was particularly good, as it fitted well with the venue, the buffet that was part of the evening (with a wedding cake in the middle) and the fact that everyone had been able to dress up to fit in without going to the trouble of fancy dress. I didn't think I had enough "evidence" to actually accuse anyone but later regretted not even writing down my first guess as it wouldn't have been too far off the mark. The evening was great fun and everyone seemed to enjoy it and take part. I would definitely recommend Old, New, Borrowed, Blue as good for getting even reluctant or first-time mystery party-goers involved.

What a cracking nights entertainment! We don't get out much nowadays with 2 kids and this was exactly what we were looking for in a good night out. Lots of fun with tongue firmly in cheek and everyone kept guessing whodunnit right to the very end. Would definitely attend another!!!!!
