The quiet little Irish town of Killfenny is both picturesque and traditional. Life in the village has continued pretty much as it has done since it was first constructed in 1901 and all the residents are happy, at least, they were until recently…

Lee Prechaun, the current owner of the Prechaun Family Estate has plans to demolish over half the village and modernise the area with an extensive pleasure complex and designer shopping mall.

The villagers are up in arms and an urgent meeting is called in the village hall to oppose the plans. However, when the villagers arrive they find that someone has already dealt with the proposal! Lee Prechaun is dead. Strung from the rafters!

FAQ's

How long does it take to play a murder mystery game?

How long a murder mystery game takes to play depends on the number of players, the format (virtual or face-to-face), and other factors like eating and drinking consumption.

  • Virtual games: Approximately 10 minutes per suspect (e.g., 1 hour for 6 players, 80 minutes for 8 players). A 20-player game on Zoom can be finished in 2 hours with a faster pace.
  • Face-to-face games: Typically take 2–3½ hours when combined with a meal, but can vary depending on how relaxed the dining is. Adding ad-libbing, general conversation, can extend the duration.
  • Quick large-group games: Custom “suspect/witness” split formats can reduce game time and maintain pace.

On average, dinner party muder mystery games take 2–3½ hours depending on circumstances.

You can find a more in-depth answer with more examples here.

Yes the host can play. We designed our games to give you options when using our murder mystery games as a host you can decide to either

For downloadable kits delivery is instant.  As soon as you clear check out you’ll be able to download your order.

If you order a CUSTOM version of a game – the first kit you will be able to access will be the original order.  This is because we manually sit and adjust the games in the office when they’re ordered, so any customsation requires human input.  This means the customisation will be done as soon as we can do it.  Usually this is within 2 working days and once finished we email it to you.  However we know how people like to plan… so the website delivers the original game immediately and we follow this up manually with an adjusted copy as soon as we’ve finished the work!

We are sensitive to the environment so rather than cutting down thousands of trees and holding stock, we print on demand.

This means printed order requests are handled within 24-48 hours and they’re usually dispatched as soon as they’re printed.

We work a 5 day week in the retail team.  This means orders are shipped Monday through Friday.

Click here for more information about shipping times.

Yes, our games can be played in odd group sizes. We have a few options on how to do this:

  1. One guest can play as the inspector. In this case, a game for 8 players would suit a party of 9, for example. The option for a guest to play the inspector is included in all our Murder Mystery game kits.
  2. Ask us to adjust the game for you. We can make a number of changes to our games to fit your party; in most cases, this is by removing a character. There is a charge for this service, and it can be ordered when buying your game. Just order the size bigger than you need and use the customise game option to choose to remove one character.
  3.  Get creative with your casting; people can share roles, or someone can play two characters.

I hosted this online for my 40th birthday with my pals in the UK (I'm based in New Zealand) - we had so much fun, the instructions were easy to follow and I enjoyed it so much I'll be trying another one out (in person this time here in NZ) in a few weeks!

This was the first time I'd ever done a murder mystery let alone hosted one but all the instructions and guides made it so easy to follow and the individual down character booklets were a nice touch! Everyone absolutely loved it and enjoyed getting into character and all of the twists in the story. We did it virtually and went for the 8 person story and used the pre-recorded inspector audio files (hint if you are on google meet, upload them onto your private google drive you can then play them from a chrome tab and share the audio). Would definitely do another

I host about 4 murder-mystery parties a year with close friends and family members. There can be anywhere from 10 to 14 of us, depending on how everyone’s schedules are going. When I decided to host a party in March, I looked around for a St. Patrick’s Day party. A few I got from other sites just were’nt what I was looking for. Then, my search engine pulled up the Red Herring Games website. I have been in love every since! Who Lynched Lee Prechaun is a fun game to host. It’s simple, the characters are pretty much everyday people, so the costumes are easy to assemble. I’ve bought other games by Joanne Smedley before, and she’s an awesome writer. She’s very funny and her plots are simple to follow, yet with a few tricks here and there to keep you guessing. My guests and I had a great time playing this game, complete with very very bad Irish accents. I hosted the game in my den, which has a small bar, so we switched the setting to Ginny’s pub and the game worked out great. I decorated for St. Patty’s Day and we even followed some of the recipes given with the game. Everything was perfect, the party went smoothly and my guests had a great time. I really like the format of the Red Herring Games. They are so simple to use, and you get so much. Also, if you check some of the prices from other sites, you’ll notice Red Herring has some really great deals and the 10% off coupon is a really great bonus. You can tell the people behind this site take pride in what they do, and they offer a complete package. I didn’t need any help, but I’ve seen some reviews that say all the authors are very helpful if you have questions. You also get to download a free preview, so really, how can you go wrong? Thank you for a wonderful and easy evening of fun and games with family and friends. I have since purchased a variety of titles and can’t wait to enjoy them as well. Keep up the great work!

Who Lynched Lee Precaun was the 3rd mystery adapted for us by Jo. It was brilliant, hilarious and thoroughly enjoyed by all. A crowd have a weekend away every March, so, there were plenty of St Patrick’s Day decorations to put us in the appropriate mood! I’m about to order my 4th mystery – can’t wait to get started, the crowd are really looking forward to it!! Definately 5 stars!

I hosted this murder mystery party last weekend and it was a great success. We all enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and everyone got into the spirit of it and we had a great evening. It was the first Red Herring murder mystery party I have tried and I was very impressed. Can’t wait to try another one and with Christmas and New Year around the corner I think that will be very soon.

Customise this game

This game can be customised to fit your event for an additional fee.

It’s hard to give “ball park” figures for what different customisations would cost however we’ve attempted to HERE.

Please do contact us for a free quote if you would like any customisations on your game before purchase.

Remember… if you just need 1 extra person, or 1 less person, why not have someone play the inspector role?

The inspector can usually be male or female as the “for real” inspector can simply invent a new name for themselves.

Some hosts prefer to play the inspector role as it means they can work on the catering while the round plays out amongst their guests.
