Burglar….it’s a steal!
It’s been a year of radio silence when it comes to this top secret project, but with it all complete we can finally announce what we’ve been up to behind the scenes of the usual office chaos here at HQ.
A brand new family board game!
Burglar is the brain child of owner-manager Jo Smedley who already has over 100 scripts and dinner party games under her belt. She loves board games, and this new game takes a step back from murder into something less sinister as it’s a heist rather than a death (though she promises another murder game IS on the way too!)
6 days ago this new project launched onto Kickstarter in the hope of getting it fully funded to permit manufacturing before Christmas 2019… and we’re already over half way towards the amount we need!
What’s in the box….
- The board – which is a plan view of a sumptuous country manor house living room. Sets the scene for the crime. With six different entry points colour coded to the six players. You can play with 2-6 players.
- 18 valuable “target” cards – which clearly identify the items you’re looking for within the room. These are to be kept hidden from other players until the objects they match are collected.
- 18 valuable cards and 2 dog tiles – which are hidden in the room at the start of game play.
- 7 furniture tiles – which are moved around by players during the game, creating a unique moveable game which means it’s different every time you play.
- 6 people counters
- 1 dice
The first edition of Burglar is being funded via Crowdfunding.
Red Herring Games, despite it’s international reach, is still a very small company employing 5 individuals in the UK, and with a small team of office dogs on stand by for stress relief when things get too chaotic!
As a result, finding a speculative £7000 to fund the first print run is too big a stretch, but thankfully Kickstarter is on hand to allow no-risk pre-ordering.
Burglar has been on the drawing board for 5 years at HQ along with a pair of other games including Framed and Swag which we hope to move ahead with in the New Year.
Developing a board game needs more than just a good idea. It needs an experienced design team, play testing, rule examining and game consultancy in order to ensure the board game is unique and the best it can be.
Matt Knott (Illustrator and Game Consultant) and Anna Whitehead (Ingenium Games) acted as our experienced consultants to bring this board to life.
I’m trusted with top visitor attractions and the worlds most popular gaming and entertainment brands because I care that fans, audiences and players get exactly the experience they deserve. I design and produce creative, interactive and immersive playful experiences with best-in-class creative and Hollywood production values.”
Said Matt Knott.
“Burglar has been a lot of fun to work on. It delivers on all levels of family gameplay, kids LOVE to play this game and we’ve seen some competitive streaks from our adult playtesters too! I’m really proud and humbled by the confidence Jo and her team put in us to create such an awesome game. I can’t wait to see the final product.”
Matt runs the Game Creation Accelerator programme, working with game designers and publishers, turning their ideas into beautifully illustrated, toy-fair ready products.
