Murder Mystery Games for ages 9-12 (tweenagers)

Table of Contents

Murder mystery games for ages 9-12 can be surprisingly hard to find – especially ones that strike the perfect balance between fun, age-appropriate content, and genuine intrigue. We get it. You’re here because you’ve got a tweenager, a child aged 9 to 12 – who’s ready to dive into a murder mystery games for tweens that include clues, characters, and whodunnit drama. And you’re on the hunt for a game that actually works for their age group: something exciting, immersive, and totally engaging.

Whether your child is still young at heart and loves energetic group play or is showing signs of wanting something more grown-up and sophisticated, we’ve got you covered. At Red Herring Games, we understand that no two tweens are alike, and that’s why we design murder mystery games that cater to a wide range of personalities, reading levels, and party styles.

Why Picking for Tweens is So Hard (But Worth It!)

Tweens are a wonderful, complicated bunch. Some are still “young at heart” and want to dash around solving puzzles and do scavenger hunts. Others are ready to step into the shoes of grown-up detectives, looking for the sophistication of a regular dinner party mystery.

If you’re planning a party for this age group, then despite what you’ll be told elsewhere – there is NO one-size-fits-all solution.  All tweenagers are different.

At Red Herring Games, we get asked all the time: “Which game is right for my child?”   But there’s a huge range in maturity, reading ability, and interests at this age. Some children will love the high-energy, group-style games we design for kids’ parties. Others will want the challenge and sophistication of our dinner party-style mysteries. And sometimes, you’ll have both types in one group!

What Are the Options for Murder Mystery Games for Ages 9-12?

Children’s Mysteries: These are perfect for the young at heart tweens who love running around, solving puzzles as a team, and getting hands-on. For example, “The Party Palaver” (pitched for 10–12 year olds in a big hall) and “The Intergalactic Mystery” (originally written for an 11-year-old boy) are great choices for older, more active kids.  They are designed a little like escape games are, with 6 games that create 6 answers, all of which link together to solve a master puzzle.  What we always say with kids mysteries is that if you download one and decide it’s pitched too young – just reach out – we’ll refund NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

Dinner Party-Style Games: For tweens who want to play it like the grown-ups, our Teen-rated games are a fantastic first step. These have “tamer” plot lines but feel more sophisticated.  They are however designed for adults, which some kids may find long and dull.  So it’s important to have a hosting adult there who can keep up the pep.  Also you may want to have us split the group into a “suspect/Witness” format which we do when we’re hosting for tweenagers ourself.

In this format, you pick your most outgoing kids as the suspects and have the shyer individuals as witnesses.  They’ll all have a role to dress up to – but only the suspects have the acting roles – the other guests just ask questions.  You can find more information on hosting dinner party style games on this blog: The ultimate guide for hosting murder mystery games for teenagers and young adults

Interactive mystery games: Like the dinner party games these have an element of interaction between guests, but they are designed to feel more “event-like”  So you only need 6 in speaking roles, everyone else is detectives asking questions.  The big bonus with these games is the addition of photographic evidence giving the kids something to look at and handle.  We also have a mystery only game called “Superblooper” which means you don’t even need to worry about the “murder” element of the murder mystery.

Our interactive games can be used with any size number, and for younger groups we’d suggest having the older teens or adults in the speaking “acting” roles, and putting all the younger children in detective roles.   They are more expensive, but with the 65% discount for private parties it’s nearer the £140 mark.  And you do get a much better experience.  These are the games we often host with youngsters if we’re contracted in to help.

Pitching to the Group

The best game for your tweens depends on both their maturity and their friendship group. If you’re not sure, here’s our golden rule: try the one that looks like the best fit. If it’s not right, just email us! We’ll refund or exchange your game, no quibbles. We’d much rather you get the perfect party than feel stuck with something that doesn’t work.

You may find you need a combination idea.  So taking one game as base, and adjusting how things are delivered.  We’ve had great success adapting games for tweens before.  Adding in game elements from the children’s kits, to a more mature plot, changing how information is presented each round to pep things up a bit.

e.g.  – Round one – pulling out the key information from the suspects and presenting this as evidence that the children review either as photographic evidence, or other things like newspaper reports.  There could also be a scavenger hunt for clues which you could leave marked around the house.

Round two – using a shortened version of the regular Q and A from the game, then breaking for an activity that reveals some new information e.g. a jigsaw puzzle which when assembled provides a clue on the reverse.

Round three – shortening the Q and A again, but also adding in further evidence and key information they reach by cracking the code to a safe. / padlocked box, clues to which are found around the house, or decoded after hunting for cipher information.

A Bit About Customisation

You know your child and their friends better than we do, and if you’re considering a murder mystery then the chances are you are quite creative yourself.  We are totally happy to email game materials to you in MSword to allow you to make your own changes and keep the prices down.  Equally if you’re cash rich and time poor – then you can ask us to adapt something to suit.

Reading Levels: If you have younger tweens or mixed ages, then be assured all our dinner party games are designed to be read in 1st person making them easy to use for younger readers However we may need to simplify some language further or make some changes to remove love tangles or make more explicit the adult subtext that might sail over their heads as they aren’t as familiar with banking, legal, work or financial terminology and themes.

Gender Balance: If you have a group with more girls than boys (or vice versa), then we can often adjust gender ratios – all you need to do is let us know your numbers and which games you’re interested in, and we’ll quote for any tweaks needed.  We also have some gender neutral games that may suit.

Character Sensitivities: Some characters and plot points may be gender-specific and romantic in nature (for example, someone is dating the victim, or another guest). You may want to  avoid awkward situations for tweens, so if you’d like to remove any “love tangles,” just ask! We’re happy to help make things comfortable for everyone.

Just need some help?

No worries! It’s often easiest to talk it through with one of the team.  We’re probably one of only very few companies out there with full time staff focussed on providing murder mystery experiences across the globe. Give us a call on +44 (0)1472 348909 and we’ll help you find the right kit for your group, or suggest tweaks to make it perfect.  Jo and Kieran in the office are both parents.  They’ve either “been there” or are going through it with their own brood!

Tweens are at that in-between stage.  While there’s no “one size fits all” answer, there IS a perfect fit for your group (even if it takes a couple of tries). At Red Herring Games, we’re here to help you get it right, with free exchanges, honest advice, and plenty of options to suit every kind of tween.
