The Brandy Butter Murders

TheBrandyButterMurders

It’s the Brandy Butter Company’s annual Christmas night out.

The staff are decked out in their Christmas finery, and with Christmas decorations festooning the walls and Christmas music playing through the sound system, everyone is set to enjoy themselves – however, things do not go to plan.

The party spirit abruptly tumbles when a phone call comes in from the night watchman at the factory. Jack Frost, one of the less popular managing directors has been found… dead. And not just dead, but drowned in a vat of the company’s brandy!

The Cast:

Detective Inspector Si Lentnite
– The policeman sent to solve the crime
Efficient in his own peculiar way, Si Lentnite has an unusual method of solving crimes – he involves everyone! If anything he is more like a bungling detective than a methodical one, but it has to be said, he does get results.

Noel Nowell – Managing Director
Dressed formally, but with a silly Christmas hat on so as to endear himself to his staff, Noel has invested both time and money into the Brandy Butter Company and likes to think of his workforce as one big happy family.

Carole Singer – Director of Finance.
Expensively dressed and with a tight hold on the company purse, Carole has a direct manner and doesn’t suffer fools or petty frivolities gladly.

Erma Starre – Customer Service Manager
With a good grasp of human psychology Erma Starre dresses to impress and has always managed to deal with any complaints received very effectively.

Ivor Cracker – Marketing Manager
Fun loving and full of ideas, not all of them good ones, Ivor Cracker is a snappy dresser and likes to let his hair down at office parties.

Chris Tingle – Factory Manager.
Dedicated and hardworking, Chris’s primary loyalty has always been to his staff. Although out of his work overalls tonight, he is clearly uncomfortable in smart clothes and is doing his best to look scruffy.

Holly Reith – Union Representative and Health and Safety Officer
Attractive and feisty, Holly is a bit of a party animal. She certainly doesn’t associate with the management; her loyalties are entirely with her fellow workers.

Never run a large group mystery before? Then don’t panic!

This format of game is ideal for novice hosts.

This particular game format requires 7 (or 8) cast who can also participate as “detectives” to if wished, use of 1 large room with stage area, and a few easy to obtain prop clues.

This mystery requires very little rehearsal time, and the cast do not need to learn any lengthy back story. Cast can usually manage to perform the short skits after just 30 minutes to an hour run through on the day, or can act “script in hand” throughout the performance.

Two murders occurs during the event. Usually one happens before the first script (and is announced within that script, and one occurs mid way through the evening.

Your guests will play the role of detectives. You can have any number of detectives, your only limit is the size of your room, and confidence of your cast. Performing for large groups over 100 in number, your cast may benefit from added sound support.

The audience will watch 2 fully acted scenes, witness two murders and will be required to solve the case by bartering and exchanging clues between the teams in order to see as much information about the case as possible.

This style of murder mystery usually works best with 40+ guests.

  1. This was our third mystery from Red Herring Games. A lot of fun. Being from Newfoundland, Canada, the British humour was not lost on the audience, however, we did have to slightly change some of the terminology in places. Getting the mystery via download is great, because it is instant and can be customized. For instance we do up our own billboard posters, print the clues with Christmas images to give it a polished look, created customized labels for our bottles of Brandy that the audience could relate to, etc. The possibilities are only limited by the user’s imagination. I love Red Herring Games mysteries, they are so versatile and so much fun to do. Everything you need it provided, and all kinds of suggestions and ideas that will make the night a booming success!!!

We can customise this game.  However, sadly we do have to charge for this service as even minor customisations take between 1-2 hours to process in the office and we need to buy toilet roll and biscuits as much as the next person…

It’s hard to give “ball park” figures for what different customisations would cost however we’ve attempted to HERE.

Remember… if you just need 1 extra person, or 1 less person, why not add in the inspector as your extra guest.  The inspector can usually be male or female as the “for real” inspector can simply invent a new name for themselves.

Some hosts prefer to play the inspector role as it means they can work on the catering while the round plays out amongst their guests.

Flexible and fun!

We contacted Red-Herring-Games for a party for a special occasion. Why going to restaurants to eat is the preferred activity to mark milestones is beyond me and my friends.   The choice of mystery was obvious, looking at the options from New Zealand on the web Red Herring stuck out from the international options.  A quick look at the site and games showed subtlety as well a range of choices.  The numbers you could have for each evening was important,  Red Herring had scaling options a good range of scenarios but most importantly were Jo and team being flexible, responsive and helpful.

Thank you Red Herring Games for the marvellous 'Murder!  Cargo Connections?' event that you organised for us as part of Museums at Night at the Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby. The whole evening went so well and was brilliant fun.  I know from all the feedback that our visitors had a fantastic time. It was really good working with you and I have no doubt that we will do again in the not too distant future.

I would like to thank you and your colleague for helping contribute towards our successful conference last month.  Everyone really seemed to enjoy the evening and it was rewarding that so many delegates were able to participate in addition to the main "Actors".  Our conference evaluation froms included the following comments:
  • "Enjoyed the evening entertainment!"
  • The evening entertainment was great and the confusion made it great fun!"
With thanks and best wishes.

I had no idea what to expect before purchasing a ticket for Old, New, Borrowed, Blue, which was being staged at a nearby hotel, and feared it might involve taking part in some way. However thankfully for me no acting was necessary, just some amateur sleuthing. "Wedding guests" of which I was one, were called upon to move from room to room in the hotel in groups, questioning a number of possible murderers with the aim of solving the mystery of the dead bridegroom. The interviewees were really fun characters and gave us all some good laughs. Of course they all had motives and it was a case of identifying the shiftiest. The wedding theme was particularly good, as it fitted well with the venue, the buffet that was part of the evening (with a wedding cake in the middle) and the fact that everyone had been able to dress up to fit in without going to the trouble of fancy dress. I didn't think I had enough "evidence" to actually accuse anyone but later regretted not even writing down my first guess as it wouldn't have been too far off the mark. The evening was great fun and everyone seemed to enjoy it and take part. I would definitely recommend Old, New, Borrowed, Blue as good for getting even reluctant or first-time mystery party-goers involved.

Alan Young (Personal Touch Mortgages)

What a cracking nights entertainment! We don't get out much nowadays with 2 kids and this was exactly what we were looking for in a good night out. Lots of fun with tongue firmly in cheek and everyone kept guessing whodunnit right to the very end. Would definitely attend another!!!!!
