5 reviews for Smashed Hits Poll Winners Murder (all girl game)

  1. Happy customer 2016 (verified owner)

Having read the review of Louise’s party for 13 year olds, I was initially unsure about the suitability of this murder mystery party for my daughter’s sixteenth birthday (was it potentially too young for her?).

However, my daughter’s desire to ‘do something different’ from the many 15 & 16 year old parties she had been to over the previous year, comprising of a rom com film and pizza (yuck!), led her to consider that my suggestion of a murder mystery party was a fantastic idea. So, scanning the Red Herring website a couple of months before her Christmas birthday I stumbled upon this Smashed Hits game and with several singers and budding actors amongst the invitees, we decided upon this game.

Invitations were printed, written in gold pen and sealed with sealing wax to provide an official appearance. Given the timing of my daughter’s birthday (29 Dec), we were surprised and delighted that all invited could attend. Indeed, all invited were very excited by the murder mystery party idea.

As the time approached, I sprayed some old CDs gold, purchased some black card on which to mount them and turned pictures hanging in our dining room and entrance hall into gold discs of past 1980s pop stars. A 1980s menu was planned with warm chèvre on garlic toast, followed by lasagne and salad and then raspberry mousse, followed by birthday cake! Menus were printed in gold writing and bound in gold card. They looked very authentic if I say so myself!

Our dining table was removed from our dining room and replaced with four small garden tables, each to seat three, covered in white sheets and decorated with gold ribbon and table decorations with gold candles. The dining room was set for a gold record awards dinner!

As the teenage guests arrived they were greeted by me, dressed as a waitress and providing canapés and Buck’s Fizz. Whilst a couple of participants were not quite sure what to make of this and had not come dressed in character, they all very quickly got into the spirit of the game, particularly those who had really prepared their costumes well, in advance.

Guests were duly invited into the awards ceremony reception (our dining room!) and the game began in earnest as I quickly swapped my waitress appearance for a detective. By this time those 15-16 year old girls who were not quite sure what to make of it all, soon got into character. They particularly enjoyed attempting to guess ‘whodunnit’. None guessed the murderer so none of the prizes I had bought in advance were given out!

Feedback both I and my daughter have subsequently received have suggested this to be the best birthday party ever!

Thanks to Red Herring. We will definitely choose to host this sort of party again.

How it works:

Don’t panic! There is no special acting required. Guests do not need to memorise any information, and everything they need to play their parts is provided in a handy booklet. The games are constructed so that everyone has to interact, and scripted dialogues are included to help break the ice and get everyone into character. Even total novices get into the swing of things quite quickly!

The game includes both sound files (MP3 with a download or CD with a boxed set) and a script for the inspector character who provides the setting, clues, and summaries for each round, as well as the final solution. This means as host you too can play and remain completely in the dark as to the culprit, or play the inspector yourself and invite an extra guest to the party!

Each “download and print at home” kit is provided as a zip file containing a set of PDF files for you to print at home, and a selection of MP3 files to use on the night.

Each dinner party game requires use of a printer and A4 paper (approx. 80 sheets for a 6 player kit – 240 sheets for a 20 player kit), envelopes so you can send out your invitations, and either a laptop or MP3 player (e.g. an ipod) to play the inspector MP3s; OR a CD burner so you can burn the MP3s onto a CD to run in an ordinary CD player.

When you order the game you’ll be sent a link to download the files you need.  The file will be a zip file.  This can be opened with a zip compatible program on your computer.  If you struggle to open zip files – we can email you the game directly over several emails instead – just contact us after purchase to arrange this.

You will download the following files:

  • How to use this game
  • Instructions for running the murder mystery
  • Making the most of your theme- ideas for decoration / activities.

Customise this game

This game can be customised to fit your event for an additional fee.

It’s hard to give “ball park” figures for what different customisations would cost however we’ve attempted to HERE.  Please do contact us for a free quote if you would like any customisations on your game before purchase.

Remember… if you just need 1 extra person, or 1 less person, why not have someone play the inspector role?

The inspector can usually be male or female as the “for real” inspector can simply invent a new name for themselves.

Some hosts prefer to play the inspector role as it means they can work on the catering while the round plays out amongst their guests.
