A Mediaeval Mystery

It is the dark ages. St George has finally arrived at Castle Clue to vanquish the castle’s marauding dragon only to discover (much to the King and Queen’s embarrassment) that the Dragon has gone missing and is nowhere to be found!

Fortunately a group of guests has arrived at Castle Clue who have more brains than the residents, and with a little help from Merlin they should be able to solve the mystery!

  1. Happy Customer

I came across this item while searching for party ideas for my son’s 9th birthday, and am delighted I did. The downloaded files gave us everything we needed, including instructions on how to run the mystery games, clues to print out, and even food and decoration suggestions. A benefit of this format was also that they were flexible enough to allow us to alter a few things to better fit in with the space we had available, or reword a few clues to keep the kids out of the cutlery drawers! The games can be printed straight out, or with a little bit of effort and coloured paper and card, you can soon have a pile of impressive looking scales, footprints and scrolls. Also, a couple of queries that we did have were very quickly resolved via very friendly emails from Red-Herring. – We (two adults) ran the party for 8 children aged from 6 to 9 (mix of girls and boys) – and it was well worth the preparation we did in advance (although would have required less advance prep if more adults) – and we both thoroughly enjoyed our roles in the adventure. There was enough variety in the puzzles and events that all the children enjoyed at least part of the adventure – and by getting them to all work as a team rather than against each other, they all felt involved and pleased they had solved the mystery … unlike a game of musical chairs or pass the parcel where only one person is the winner. One child happily announced at the end, that it was the best Knights-themed party he had ever been too … although after a confused look crossed his face, he did admit that it was probably also the first. After the last child had gone home, our 6 year old daughter immediately announced she wanted a party like that for her birthday, and set off around the house to replace all the clues so she could play the games again!

How it works:

Then don’t panic!

Hosting a themed mystery party isn’t too time consuming, and with ample preparation and help of a few adults prepared to act the part it is really quite simple and great fun!

This game does not require the children to play a part. Instead they work as a group to try and solve the mystery presented to them by the hosting adult through a series of games. There is no murder involved – just a mystery, in this case a missing dragon.

To run this game you need a minimum of two adults who will play the host (male or female ) and Merlin (male). Both should be prepared to do a little acting, but rote learning of scripts is not required.

Each “download and print at home” kit is provided as a zip file containing a set of PDF files for you to print at home.

Each game requires use of a printer and A4 paper (approx. 80 sheets for a children’s kit), and envelopes so you can send out your invitations.  It is expected you’ll create your own props as needed by the games (these aren’t complicated) and make amendments to printed elements to personalize them to your party.

When you order the game you’ll be sent a link to download the files you need.  The file will be a zip file.  This can be opened with a zip compatible program on your computer.  If you struggle to open zip files – we can email you the game directly over several emails instead – just contact us after purchase to arrange this.

We usually recommend purchasing a downloadable copy of the children’s mystery kits – if you decide you’d rather have us print a copy for you – you can ring up and upgrade to a printed set.

You will download the following files:

  • How to use this game
  • Instructions for running the murder mystery
  • Ideas for decoration / activities.
  • Invitations
  • Recipe suggestions
  • Money off voucher towards next purchase

This is the easiest way to play.  Everything you need will arrive in a box, pre-printed, directly to your door.

You will receive through the post:

  • Instruction booklet includes all the mystery games, recipe suggestions, theming ideas and extra party games.
  • Invitations and envelopes x 15
  • Money off voucher towards next purchase (printed inside the instruction booklet)

We always ship within 24 hours meaning orders arrive as quickly as possible.

As each game is printed on demand, we can also provide a customisation service on any order.  See details further down the page on what we can do to tailor this game to your party.
