    It is the opening night of Hollywood’s latest blockbuster film “Undercover and Dangerous”.

    Unfortunately midway through their glitzy cocktail reception disaster strikes! The promotional stunt goes horribly wrong!

    Tom Spanks, the star of the movie, was scheduled to jump out from between the sheets of the mock double bed in the foyer waving his gun and quoting some lines from the film.

    Instead the sheets twitch and then…. nothing. Tom fails to materialise. On investigation, the star is not just undercover – he’s dead as well! The question is: who killed him?

  • Twisted at the Transylvanian – Large group script

    The Transylvanian, a popular nightclub in town, is holding its yearly anniversary party. Mike Hobb, the club owner has sent out invitations to only a handful of friends and social elite to attend the gala event and have a howling good time.

    Unfortunately, poor Mike will never get to enjoy the party as he has been found dead at the bottom of the wine cellar stairs! Was his death due to natural causes… or was it murder?

    Some things might prove to be a bit “twisted” at the Transylvanian… Help detective I.C. Moore and the other guests figure out what really happened.

    Each year, pop stars all over the world wait eagerly for their nominations and subsequent invitations to the annual Smashed Hits Poll Winners Party. This year has been no exception.

    Tensions are high already, but then disaster strikes – Doug, the evening’s presenter, is found dead – in the gents toilets!

    With stars vying for awards there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that his death is the result of foul play – murder to be exact!

  • Murder Rehearsed! – Large group script

    Burnton under Ash is a small but fairly busy market town.

    Burnton Barnstormers (the local amateur dramatics society) are preparing to stage their fifteenth annual production, a musical comedy called “A Peek At Peking”

    The auditions are over, the cast selected. They are about to start the first rehearsal when the body of the show’s director, local bank manager Red E Cash, is discovered covered in blood, face down in a props basket with a gaping wound on his head.

  • Who Lynched Lee Prechaun? – Large group script

    The quiet little Irish town of Killfenny is both picturesque and traditional.

    Lee Prechaun, the current owner of the Prechaun Family Estate, has decided to drag Killfenny into the 21st century kicking and screaming. He has plans to demolish over half the village and modernise the area with an extensive pleasure complex and designer shopping mall.

    The villagers are up in arms and an urgent meeting is called in the village hall to oppose the plans. However, when the villagers arrive they find that someone has already dealt with the proposal! Lee Prechaun is dead. Strung from the rafters!

    Wealthy author and New Orleans resident, Louisiana Williams is throwing her annual Mardi Gras party.

    The beads will fly and the booze will flow, but in the midst of all the revelry, poor Louisiana is found dead in the bathtub.

    Help Inspector Claude Cluesnot and the rest of the colourful “krewe” try to decide who is the true masquerader in this Mardi Gras murder!

  • The Jolly Rogered – Large group script

    Diamond White, a 17th century galleon belonging to Captain Crooke, has just returned from its adventures, laden with precious treasures.

    Celebrations, however, have been sadly cut short. When the Captain’s wife returned to their room at the Ship’s Inn she found her husband had been stabbed through the heart with his very own hook! The hook replaced the Captain’s right hand, lost following an accident involving the ship’s cannon and a drunken bet – but that’s another story!

    It would seem that the late Captain was not as respected as he thought, but then his name was rather apt. The big question is, who hooked the crook??

    With rock and roll music and thick shakes, the Doo-Wop diner is the popular place to hang out in Ryedale.

    However – things aren’t exactly rocking at the diner this evening when Elvis is found outside, dead in the garbage!

    His death comes as a great shock to both the leather clad G-birds and the pink jacketed Fuchsia Girls. However more shocks are to follow when the police arrive and announce that the killer is one of them!

Flexible and fun!

We contacted Red-Herring-Games for a party for a special occasion. Why going to restaurants to eat is the preferred activity to mark milestones is beyond me and my friends.   The choice of mystery was obvious, looking at the options from New Zealand on the web Red Herring stuck out from the international options.  A quick look at the site and games showed subtlety as well a range of choices.  The numbers you could have for each evening was important,  Red Herring had scaling options a good range of scenarios but most importantly were Jo and team being flexible, responsive and helpful.

I had no idea what to expect before purchasing a ticket for Old, New, Borrowed, Blue, which was being staged at a nearby hotel, and feared it might involve taking part in some way. However thankfully for me no acting was necessary, just some amateur sleuthing. "Wedding guests" of which I was one, were called upon to move from room to room in the hotel in groups, questioning a number of possible murderers with the aim of solving the mystery of the dead bridegroom. The interviewees were really fun characters and gave us all some good laughs. Of course they all had motives and it was a case of identifying the shiftiest. The wedding theme was particularly good, as it fitted well with the venue, the buffet that was part of the evening (with a wedding cake in the middle) and the fact that everyone had been able to dress up to fit in without going to the trouble of fancy dress. I didn't think I had enough "evidence" to actually accuse anyone but later regretted not even writing down my first guess as it wouldn't have been too far off the mark. The evening was great fun and everyone seemed to enjoy it and take part. I would definitely recommend Old, New, Borrowed, Blue as good for getting even reluctant or first-time mystery party-goers involved.

What a cracking nights entertainment! We don't get out much nowadays with 2 kids and this was exactly what we were looking for in a good night out. Lots of fun with tongue firmly in cheek and everyone kept guessing whodunnit right to the very end. Would definitely attend another!!!!!
